Finishing Touches

We are nearly there with a lovely contemporary garden in Rutherglen which has been transformed from a disintegrating, ageing site to a sharp, contoured, easy maintenance garden. The house itself is presented in a completely different light and whilst the front garden is practical and includes a large driveway, the back garden provides a great…

Tales of the Riverbank

I was lucky enough this year to be asked to come up with a design concept for a wonderful riverside garden. An Artic Hut had been erected near the river in a secluded spot where the river and it’s wildlife could be quietly viewed. The hut needed a deck that was in keeping with the…

Dowanhill

This Glasgow west-end garden contrasts contemporary materials with a traditional setting and the result is complimentary. Offset vitrified planking leads around the exterior of the house to a small rear courtyard with seating areas and artificial turf. Grasses, shrubs and perennials chosen for their foliage make for a low-maintenance contemporary garden. Thanks to the team…

Little Sparta

I had an unexpected trip to this interesting garden in the Pentland Hills. Created by the poet Ian Finlay Hamilton in the Arcadian style, it it a fascinating piece of personal history and design. Love it or hate it, it is impossible to not feel the passion and delight that must have been integral to…

Mount Florida Water Feature

This tranquil water feature and seating area replaced an overgrown planting bed. The Cor-Ten screens are bespoke, set behind a circle of Porphyry setts. A centre water bowl provides some soft movement and sounds as the water overspills gently. The planting, when mature will be soft and billowing with grasses, verbena, rogersia, salvias, hostas, ferns…

Strathbungo

Still to be finished with some soft herbaceous planting, this classic courtyard garden was created from a damp patch of grass. The whole space has been lifted by the natural stone paving and the property complimented by the formal shapes of the buxus balls and topiarised holly trees
