This was a large planting project for a newly constructed garden. I approached the project by designing a naturalistic planting scheme for the majority of the planting areas. A large amount of existing viburnums and pieris were moved to the boundaries to create a double evergreen frame rather than removing them. It was a challenge with over 2000 plants to design, source and plant in this sun-soaked riverside garden. The garden is now starting to fill out and the layers are becoming more obvious, from the beautiful himalayan birches, amelanchiers and hawthorns, through the shrub layer and into the ground cover matrix, determined by the position and elevation of the planting beds within the garden which was dry at the top and moist at the lower levels.
